In June of '14, FAIT and PPSIT enabled a new QlikView user interface for statistical models developed by Global Analytics and HP Finance that allows analysts to compare model output to historical revenue and past and future Flash submissions. Initially launched to a small pilot team, this has has been expanded for use PanHP. For 75 years HP has managed its forecast via a yearly and monthly process known today as Budget and Flash. This year, through the efforts of a small team, this is about to change. Cathie Lesjak is now asking the finance teams to also provide the predicative analytics forecast as a way to triangulate their traditional forecast.
Last year Jon Flaxman was tasked with improving forecast accuracy for HP. He created a team including his chief of staff and several statisticians from HP Labs. This team worked on creating predictive algorithms that gave the most accurate forecast possible. They were using an open source code base called “R”. “R” is a great tool for statisticians but has a 1970’s DOS like interface. They had a great tool to help the forecast process but no way to deploy it. They got a recent Baylor grad involved (Trevor Thompson), who was able to provide an improved user interface for the Finance community. For the next 9 months, Trevor Thompson worked with the Finance team and became a key contributing member. The web-site was presented to Jon Flaxman as a proof of concept for the analytics ability to improve the forecast. Jon liked it and wanted it live with real data in 90 days. Additionally, the need for a secure method to incorporate actuals led to a partnership with the PPS IT team to include the “R” code as part of their Qlikview dashboard. PPS IT were able to incorporate this model inside of 3 weeks, from POC to Production! This is now live and the Predictive forecast is now part of the Close alongside Flash and Budget.
